He lived in Hunterdon county on a big estate (Bedminster?), which is going to become one of Trump's golf courses I think.
After reading Smokey Yunick's book I was intrigued by De Lorean so I poked around a little. My take on the whole deal is that he had a dream about his own car company but was totally in the red after he stopped getting government assistance for his factory in Belfast, and sales weren't stellar because the cars weren't on par with other sports cars in the market. So he was out of options and got into drugs to try to drum up some money to save his failing business.
