Guitar players inside - need a stompbox

I've been playing guitar for 12 years, but the last half of those years I had been playing bass more...was in a band and played around with others here and there. I've gotten back into playing guitar again (I have a Fender Mexican Strat with Fat 50s) and recently bought a new practice amp, a Marshall MG30DFX. The clean channel on it is very nice and it's got some good effects built in. However the distortion is not the greatest. No matter how I set it it just sounds muddy, so I'm thinking I could use a pedal. Should I go with an EQ to boost the gain? Or should I just get a full distortion pedal and not even bother with the one on the amp? What are some good ones?

Before I recommend a pedal, whats your favorite style of music you like to play? Bands?

On guitar I mostly play rock, stuff like ACDC, Guns N' Roses... I like a sound that's hard and crisp.

Yeah, I had a Metal Zone back in the day. I had lent to one of my guitarists and didn't see it again after that. I might go for one of those again, but like to get some opinions on what's out now.

just go all out and get a pedal with all different types of stuff in it, then you can make your own
