is there any way to bypass inspection and keep my reg car insurance ?

right now im looking at getting my hands on a 72 olds cutlass id like to keep it on my reg car insurance that i have my trans am on is there any way i can do so and still bypass inspection or am i stuck getting classic car insurance if i want to bypass inspection

AFAIK, proof of collector/classic insurance is required for collector/classic registration

You can get classic plates, AKA "Q Q" plates, and have the car on your regular insurance policy. That's what I'm doing with my 73 AMX. Granted it prolly isn't the best way to do things, 'cause if I have an accident I'm totally fooked...

while we're on the subject, what are the requirements for QQ plates? is there a mileage restriction etc?

QQ plates are 25 years or older, and i do believe there is a mileage restriction

3000 miles a year...... and to/from car shows only with proof of car show...but its not enforced thatt much and has to be kept in a garage.. theres more to but thats off the top of my head

The state just wants to see insurance that meets state liability minimums. They don't know/care about property coverage (ie collector insurance).

Here, I called the state and asked for all the info they could send me on QQ plates and CC reg, and this is all I got:

very easy the 69 ss we put together last month had a rich smell when it idled and it passed -- its 12 parts per million hahahahah raw gas has to soak the wand before it fails -- jz

Why would you want to keep your regular insurance company for a collector vehicle? The collector's insurance is much cheaper and provides full agreed upon value which would cover the car fully. Regular insurance would need an appraisal to insure the car for agreed value otherwise it would be covered as a 26 year old car which would be worth $1 after depreciation. You can't drive a collector car to work or to the store to pick up milk, it has to be a show or club related function. So if you really want to drive it any time you want, get it appraised, put it on your regular insurance but make sure that they agree with you on current value and then get regular plates and hope it passes inspection. The QQ plates cost $44 for a 3 year registration vs the normal $75 a year for regular plates.

I switched registration on the iroc to collectors and I still have regular insurance on it. I just went to inspection a couple of weeks ago and all they did was check the mileage on the car and wrote it down for their records. You're limited 3000 miles a year. I have no cats, the car is pretty loud, I had bald tires and all that didn't matter lol

Ted, what do you think your car is worth and do you have an agreed value on your policy? If not, you would probably be lucky to get $2500 for the car if something bad happened. You might want to check with your insurance company to make sure it's fully covered for what you think it's worth.

I know they're trying to avoid inspection, but by using regular insurance they won't have adequate insurance if something bad were to happen. Regular insurance will look at the age of the car and the determined value will be almost nothing after depreciation. That 72 Cutlass that might be worth $10K will be insured as a $2 vehicle with 34 years worth of depreciation. So you guys need to make sure your insurance company agrees with you on the true value of the car. That usually requires an appraisal too.

as far as insurance goes i want to keep it on my reg insurance sense it will be the only car ill own ill be getting rid of the trans am if i get this car " only have room for 1 car in the driveway" and my motorcycle is my daily driver anyways and i dont think you can have collector car insurance unless you have a car as a daily driver which i dont

You are correct. You need a DD to have collector car insurance.

Why not? Only the noise of the glasspacks might stop you. No cats so headers are not a reason for failure.

You're absolutely right, I probably wouldnt get much under my regular policy. I was going to use this collector company that my friend used on his 89 GTA at an agreed value of $6000, but they changed their policies and the cars have to be at least 20 years old I think it is. I want to look into hagerty or something. I think soemone on here has their 97 insured under them.

http://www.grundy.com/ <----supposedly has an unlimited mileage policy for collector cars. i tried insuring my camaro under them but you cant have anyone under 25 as a driver on the car. so eff that idea

I dont know about year, but Hagerty will likely require you to be 25 or older, have a daily driver and a clean drivers record.
