James-your avatar is disturbing

as for the thread...I think its just dumb...you have too many overlapping cars that caniballize(i know my spelling is wrong but had to go back to IE) as it is...now they are going to add to that...IMO just detrimental. Add to that isnt GM & Chrysler in the hole financially? Why buy a company thats in debt when YOUR in debt?

GM isn't actually in debt, they just haven't been making money from cars the last few years. but that is turning around quickly with their move towards mroe world platforms, stornger advertising campaigns, and constant market introductions.
GM has literally billions of dollars saved for acquisitions and technology purchase. GM has made tons of profit as a "parent" and technology firm for companies like ac delco, bosch, borg warner, and many others.
GM is still responsible for the largest percentage of vehicle parts in the world and there is not a single car company on the planet that doesn't buy something from GM.

chryslers problme is the result of the benz-izing of too much of their product line. on average the mopar family used to have the best average value and best value retention by pecentage for their vehicles. that all changed since the MB merger when it was somehow decided to put profit margain ahead of total sales.
not usre where the decision came from, but i would think it had a lot to do with the price that many financial experts considered over-paying for chrysler.

GM has talked about acquiring other companies and setting up joint development with other companies for years and years. They speculate, internally, about what might pay off if they pursue limited, purpose-built joint ventures with other companies, all the time. This is no different.

Some reporter somewhere heard something and decided to make a mountain out of a mole hill. While an acquisition is always possible, I don't see this happening. Acquiring another large auto corporation wouldn't do much more than eliminate competition. GM has to find a formula for success that works beyond what they have now. Once they do that, they can apply that formula to other auto makers by acquiring them.

The article seems more like a joint ventures type thing to me. Two big auto makers having a couple of rough years, looking to shake things up a bit.

hemi powered camaro? LS7 powered challenger?

chrysler alread works with MB (obviously) and they produced the "world motor" with mitsubishi and I think hundai. joint ventures is nothing new, and I doubt either auto make wants to aquire the other.
