nissan altima recall

that's right, nissan is recalling 140,000 for a fire hazard. so much for the superiority of japanese manufacturers.

Funny...if that were Ford, GM, or Chrysler, it'd be all over CNN.

nissan continually rates at the bottom of jd's reliability list. although that list is crap, it does hold some merit. i've never seen someone own a nissan and not have trouble-free operation for the first couple years. i personally like some of nissan's products, but i could never own one.

QFT - all except the part about liking their product. it's built into my psyche that i positively, absolutely will never like anything foreign. well, all except the elite car makers - like ferrari, lamborghini, bugati, etc. of course, i will never be in a position to buy anything like that, but i certainly will not, ever, buy a japanese car. and i influence all of those around me that i can against buying foreign. why not support your own economy?

my GF hasnt had a problem with her 2000 maxima and when she got it used like 4 years ago she got an extended warantee and never got to use it lol, my aunt had a 97 and a 2000 pathfinder on leases and no problems there. my friends parents have two 2005 altimas with no problems.
nissan/infinity is the only jap company i like, wouldnt buy, but i like them the most, they have the nicest of all the jap cars

my 2005 altima se v6 hasn't given me an ounce of problems from day 1. While the interior is a bit creaky around the dash that is my only complaint. I am not a huge foreign car guy but like I said before if I'm paying 20-25k for a car I want it to look updated and not out of style like a lot of the american cars did when I was looking. I also won't buy a first year car ever again because of the issues I had with my grand prix after they changed the body style.

my GF's uncle traded in his 99 maxima with 249k on an 06 GTO in blue, only to have his house flood and lost the GTO with 3k miles on it!

I always found nissans went one of two ways - a few good reliable cars, like the old sentra, or generally crap buckets, like the old maximas. Never a fan, would never look at one.

i will support the superior car. the fact that i'm biased to american cars didn't influence my decisions at all. i bought my camaro and my saturn because they were FAR better than anything else i test drove. i still love BMW. i will own one eventually one of these days. but i can't stomach the price tag and other things. now that i think of it, before both my cars, i had test driven a nissan (G35 and Murano to be precise). in both instances, i felt the car to be very generic. it didn't stand out at all. my buddies 99 maxima has been to the mechanic 4 times this year. all for major problems and the car only has 90k on it. like i said before, i am yet to meet someone who has had a trouble free nissan

as for matt's comment:many people on this board drive foriegn cars. my first cars were a toyota and a isuzu. they were both early 90s cars and i did love them. both were extremely well built. but where's the rodeo now? and look what happened to the camry? my friend himself was telling me that his father (who was the biggest camry buyer and has owned each generation camry since the 80s) is switching to mazda because he feels each newer camry is giving him more and more problems.

i just spent my afternoon fixing my dads lexus. out of all the cars in our driveway, it has given us the most problems. it still has no cupholders, a broken center console, a squeak in the dash, and a suspension problem lexus cannot locate. not to mention the car is very slow, gets awful gas mileage, and has lifeless steering. its quite unimpressive for a 2 year old 40k dollar car.

I think Nissan's are cool. I've always liked the Z series. The older the better. I like the Pathfinder too. Do they make the Armada? I think that's a cool-looking truck. Its so big.

I think anyone that actually knows cars isn't fooled by the reliability perception gap.

exactly. GM dropped the ball in the '80s and produced some of the most unremarkable cars in history. well, not just GM but all of the big 3. it gave the jap cars a foothold in the american market, and some people are just brand loyal - no matter if you talk until you are blue in the face they will not accept that the american car makers are back to producing good, quality automobiles.

a lot of the media is still arced towards the japanese 3 and the koreans. it's funny how quickly a car like the kia has taken off. if people are so brand loyal to the jap cars, then how does a korean manufacturer fit into the picture?

cruise consumer reports website sometime and find out exactly how many problems those cars are having - and how few the americans are having, and you'll see that quality is back in american cars. oh, yeah, take off the blinders before you go. if you go with an open mind, you'll see a lot clearer.

jim you are so on point. you are missing one thing though, and that is that most NEW CAR BUYERS don't care for reliability. people who can afford new cars, generally don't keep them.

think about it: what car company has the highest customer loyalty? the same company who marked dead last in consumer reports reliability: Mercedes.

people buy based on reputation. GM can do whatever it can to improve reliability, but until the japanese market really falls off, people will still flock to them. honda has a reputation of being reliable. therefore if something goes wrong with the car, its because of something else. but if something goes wrong with an american car, its because its american.

again, this is an aging stereotype. it simply doesn't exist anymore. anyone who works for a car manufacturer that is in charge of more than sweeping the floor has already seen what a sloppy work ethic will do to their jobs. they are a lot more intent on keepig their jobs than ever before, and the only way to get that done is to make sure there are no mistakes.

reputation has a lot to do with what car people buy, this is true. if it was so easy to win people back, GM, Ford and Chrysler would have already done it. the only way to get people back to american cars is to educate them. ask 10 people where their money goes after the purchase and 9 of them don't know or don't care. if they know that one car equals ten jobs for americans, their point of view adjusts. that is, if they care about anyone other than themselves. that also has a lot to do with what kind of car people buy - how ego-centric are they, exactly? if they found out that their buying decision affected people's dinner tables, would it make a difference?

but how many import companies are playing on that now and are saying their cars are built in the USA

I drove a 350Z with the 6 speed. The driver position felt pretty cool but there was no torque to be found. Either they make their power at some unattainable rpm or they are seriously over rated

the recall is about the air filter, in the air box, if somthing gets in there like a lit cigarette the filter may burn, its not like all the other air filters that are oiled from the factory with nissans, thats the recall, i should know i work at a nissan dealer there is also an air deflector thats needed to be installed to stop debris from getting into the air box,
