Steering Rack and Power Steering Pump SHOT - $1100 fix!?!?

Sounds lieka bit much...

i calculated the math at the guy wanting $500 for labor... my god... where the hell is the steering rack?

it costs 230 for the rack. 300 for the pump. 75 to align i guess.

1100!??

I would think you can get that pump a lot cheaper than that, the alin sounds about right and if you are handy at all or have a friend who is put that 500 labor cost into your bank.

The steering rack is located on the front of the K member. IDK man I think you could put all that crap together if you took your time and just got the thing aligned, save alt of money down the line.

it is a fairly time consuming process, not difficult, just time consuming. the only part you actually need professional equipment for is to do a proper alignment.
the pump is an pretty easy swap, the rack is the part that takes a while. there is jsut a bunch fo stuff in the way, tight space to work. i don't see how a fully equiped shop coudl rail it for 500 in labor though. it would have to be a rate of around $100/hr to go that high

So is this the total cost breakdown he gave you?

Rack 230
Pump 300
Align 75
Labor 500
Total 1105

75 is steep for a thrust angle alignment (there are no rear adjustments in live axle cars). At 75@hour, that is 6.67 hours. Seems kind of high for that, but I don't have an estimating manual in front of me.

What was the reasoning for the rack and the pump?

You could take it elsewhere for a 2nd opinion.

Yeah who did you go to for that price?
TBH I'd check the dealerships prices. They always aren't that bad.

Sounds like he is using a brand new rack and not a remanufactured one. Or you went to a dealership.

I wasted the rack in my GTP last week, when I get my estimate I'll post it up, although I already replaced the pump and lines myself.
