now is a rear mounted battery standard on these cars or was this a custom job because the car seemed otherwise bone stock?

Looks factory to me also. As long as they replace it with the proper battery, it'll be fine. I know we had an early '90s Alfa Romeo in the shop at school a few weeks back, and that car had a trunk mounted battery as well.

A lot of cars have that now. I can tell from all the times going to vehicle accidents or car fires and looking for the battery and finally finding them in the trunk. Its always been higher end cars like BMW's, mercedes, volvos, but now we find that to be the case in smaller cars were the engine compartment are really cramped.

So does the Ion, as well as Corvette and the new Camaro.
A lot of cars do not come with spare tires now a days, so that is a lot of extra space, why not put a battery there?

It's also not a bad idea because it keeps it away from the heat of the engine.
