Anyone do a sleep study?

So, the doctors think I might have narcolepsy (not the classic kind, but a mild case of it). I have to do a sleep study to confirm, which will be the basic overnight sleep study as well as the multiple sleep latency test (multiple 20 minute naps to see how quickly I go into REM sleep). Just curious what other's experiences have been.

I had one like 10 years ago. They attach a bunch of electrodes to you and you go to sleep, no big deal. The nap test is a killer though. They let you sleep for like 20 minutes, the wake you. Then you stay awake for like thirty minutes and nap again. After doing this a few times I was exhausted. When your trying to stay awake, all you can think about is falling asleep again.

i had 3 sleep studies in the past 2 years. i was exhausted all the time and they checked me for sleep apnea, which i ended up having. they hook a bunch of stuff on you and its uncomfortable to sleep to be honest. stuff on your fingers, head and chest as well as legs. the first time i just went to sleep and they monitored me. then they decided i had sleep apnea. the second test i slept with a cpap machine and they changed the pressure during the night to see where i slept the best. the third time i returned with my own machine to see if i needed any adjustments in pressure.

its actually not bad. i told them i needed to be up for work at 5 so they had me out of there on time. its like a hotel room.

my dad had one in the past and is going for another. Not an easy task for him. He has sleep apnea and should be on oxygen at night. He has trouble with it for other medical and mental reasons, for a young person who can manage with daily activities the study should be no big deal.

Yup exact same thing......flat screen tv and all.....I have sleep apnea.....I stop breathing every twenty seconds.......b4 I was diagnosed I hadn't slept a whole night in 3 months and I would constantly fall asleep at work and while I was driving. I Was SO FREAKING HAPPY I did the study.....I've never slept so good.....I heart my cpap machine!

google.

narcolepsy in it's classic form is when people randomly fall asleep throughout the day. One minute you are talking to them, the next their head falls and they are asleep for a minute or two, and then they wake up and are fine. In my case, if I have it, I am just excessively tired throughout the day, and I can take 2 hour naps, and still be tired the entire day. They think narcoleptics get too much REM sleep, which causes issues in wakefulness.

Sleep Apnea is when a person stops breathing throughout the night, and has to wake up (usually unbeknownst to the person, they don't fully wake up) to get them to start breathing again. So people with sleep apnea use machines that force oxygen into the airways to keep them open so they stay asleep.

I work with a girl who is a narcoleptic. She's on medicine that helps keep her awake. Yeah, before I was married she fell asleep in my car and I had bad thoughts. SO WHAT!!!

Sleep Apnea reminds me of a funny story.
While taking a a psychology test (that I had no idea was coming due to, well sleeping in class) one of the questions was "I wake up every 20 minutes at night in order to take a breath. Due to this, I never get enough sleep. I have _____ _______." Me being the smart ass that I am, I wrote down " a real problem"
I assumed that the teacher created a random situation to make the question work. Apparently, I slept though the day she told the class she suffered from sleep apnea. Needless to say, she was quite pissed at my answer.

my wife is a hard snorer - i mean wake the dead snorer. so she had a sleep study done and her oxygen levels dropped to below 80% throughout the night. they have her on an oxygen machine at night now, and they are talking about surgery to correct the apnea and hypopnea (rapid, shallow breathing) during the night. that will get rid of the oxygen machine. the surgery will involve removing her tonsils and reshaping of the soft palate and the area where the tonsils were removed.

right now her attention is being diverted to her father, so everything else is on hold.

i feel ya on that one. i was lucky to get two hours continuous sleep there for a while. i am on remeron now, which has helped me up the time to at least 5 hours, which is great. i have new-found energy where before i was just listless all day - and i never wanted to do anything but lay down and try to sleep. what a crappy existence that is, when you can't sleep.
