Home Electrical Experts, I Have a Quick Question...

I have an ANCIENT GE time clock connected to my service panel. This is wired to control the outlet on the front of my house. This would be great for holiday decorations, but the timer doesn't work. So for now I just shut the outlet off at the breaker since it only controls that one outlet outside, and the doorbell. Of course, having no doorbell sucks if you're expecting someone, so my ultimate plan is to keep the doorbell working and just activate the outlet from inside when I want to turn the decorations on and off.

Here's my question. Is it possible to just remove the dead time clock and install a regular switch? I have already verified if I disconnect the wires inside the timer box the outlet doesn't work; just wondering if a regular switch is suitable there, or do I need some heavy-duty device.

Thanks in advance guys!
