swap to a 4 speed(not a typo)+
How hard is the swap to a richmond or muncie style 4 speed into an auto 3rd gen? Would the t5 parts work (clutch pedal, hydraulics, etc)? Im sure the cross member would have to be modified and a mount for the torque arm added...any input anybody? its just an ego thing... i love the 4 speed from the older camaros and i do believe they are stronger than the t5? If im wrong in that regard let me know and ill just scrap the whole idea

well in regards as to it bolting up to the back of a small block, as long as the bellhousing fits for one, you shouldnt have a problem, but you will need to switch over the clutch, flywheel, pedal assembly, linkage, and probably will need a custom driveshaft as well as a custom trans cross member. It'd be different

Early 3rd gens came with 4 speeds. i thought cable operated clutches. maybe search thirdgen.org

its no a big deal at all, u can use a super t10 as well. u will need a pedal and cable setup, bell housing, flywheel, and clutch kit and a few other small parts. drive shaft length may need to be altered. anyone of those transmissions will outlast a t5 but keep in mind, your rear will still be the weakest link.

Doesn't really matter, IIRC they all use the same bell housing bolt pattern & depth and the mount is in the same place. Might even be the same length. Well, not sure about the Richmond, they nave came GM OE I know of.

I checked my Cheverolet By The Numbers books and Muncie, Saginaw, BW SuperT10 all have identical dimension for the overall length and mount location. I see no reason that a Richmond built T10 would be any different.
You input and ouput shafts spline counts can vary, but that's no big deal.
Input splines would be either 10 (coarse spline) 26 (fine spline) and output splines would be either 27 or 32.
I don't know about the linkage? or cable?

I would think you could use the hydraulics. Just have to make sure the push/pull(I forget which one it is) is right and it will all work the same.

1982 F-bodies came with a T10 four-speed trans, and they had mechanical linkage (traditional Z-bar setup). 1983 F-bodies came with a T5 with mechanical linkage, and '84-'92 F-bodies had the T5 with hydraulics. You can't really use the T5 bellhousing for anything other than a T5, since it's tilted 17* towards the driver. See my pic here -
That would put the trans mount on a regular straight-up trans like a Muncie at that same wacky angle. So, you'd have to find the 1982-only bellhousing and Z-bar/clutch pedal assembly to put a Muncie in your car.The only option I know of is something like the Lakewood 15020 bellhousing, since it's set up for hydraulic operation, and drilled to accept either a T5, or a traditional straight-up trans. See this pic -
Of course, that bellhousing alone is over $400 from Summit, and then you still have to acquire a set of '84-up clutch/brake pedals and hydraulic assembly, a clutch kit, etc. etc. Once you figure in the cost of a good Muncie, plus all that other BS, you could buy a Tremec TKO or rebuild a World Class T5 with a Hanlon Motorsports kit so it could handle some insane HP and be $$ ahead.

Heheh, my point exactly.
I was really lucky with my T5 setup. I got it complete (fresh rebuilt T5, bellhousing, flywheel, pedals, linkage, Hurst shifter) from a friend of mine for $800 shipped from NM. That was also 6 years ago, when the going rate for an LT1 T56 setup was over $2K. Now that they're coming down in price, I might start saving my pennies for one.

Ok it is seeming like the t56 would be a better deal in the long run. Unless i can find a factory 4 speed car. I just never really liked the way the t5 feels and i dont want to break it, either. I had a t5 z28, and that was stock, and ive driven a few other t5 cars, and...eh. thats all lol. Im not a big fan of 6 speeds either but that would make the car much nicer to drive on the highway

yeah, the t10 can be done, but its a pita, Unless you buy the lakewood bell, you get stuck with mechanical linkage, no hydraulic. A t56 is a better idea, the tremec tko's are nice too, but not common used or cheap.
