I did the $199 special about 15 years ago to a 79' Stang. I did all the body work, removed all the badges, and primed it. They just light sand and spray. a little orange peal here and there. I color sanded the car afterwards which helped a little. Not too bad of a deal if you do all of the preping.

I'd pass. You're better off finding a good body shop or paying a professional to do it.

I got one done on my 91 Merc Topaz back when it was a $99 deal!
They tried to upsell me on a bunch of things - I kept on saying I am only paying $99 and that's it.
It took 3 days - when I got the car back it was immaculate! They painted the bumpers too.... I guess if I had taken some of the upselling it wouldn't happen.... but I didn't care.
I sold the car maybe 6 months later so I don't know how the paint held up.
It looked great.... but you get what you pay for.... I would only do it on a beater car.

If it's a DD/cheap car you don't care about, go for it. My in-laws did their '94 Acclaim with the peely 90's Chrysler paint and it came back looking decent. But it is very, very far from a quality job. Orange peel, tons of overspray, and some rust flecks from where they used steel wool to strip it.

Don't think of it as a paint job that your going to have on a DD, but if your going to flip the car soon then it is a bargin.

I actually called the one in maple shade earlier...199.00 is the base paint job all the time...They charge 100.00 to sand the car first(or show you how to do it yourself and sell a prep kit for $35.00). I told him I had a few small dings in both rear quarter panels and he said they would do the whole job under 400 bucks...Some of you believe to much of what you read from other people..It all depends on how the car is prepped. Like other things Maaco has gotten better w/ the times. Sorry I dont have thousands to throw at a paint job.

i had my 91 done by maaco, i had a single stage job done, i dont remember what it cost. I put hours and hours into prep work and it wound up turning out outstanding. Its possible that some ppl might remember my camaro w/ the mystic teal paint, but it was definitely worth the money. It didnt come out to a show quality finish (obviously), but I was impressed, way beyond expectations. I must add that every maaco is different, some good and some are horrible. Depending on how much prep time you put in, will certainly affect results.

Sherwin Williams paint that they buy by the 55 gallon drum... horrible paint cheap single stage and cheaper base clear paint. I usually give it 2-3 years if your lucky till they need to be re-done

I firmly believe if you go and investigate some of these Maaco's, that you will find good shops, and bad shops. I stopped into the one in Saddle Brook and watched them prep a car; their tape job was horrible, and another car that they just pulled out of a spraybooth had terrible orange peel and overspray everywhere.
Then I checked out the Maaco down on Tonnelle Ave in North Bergen. They had a '55 Chevy in there, a few Vettes, and a few other old muscle cars. I had them paint my old daily driver '86 Cutlass, and it came out great. And, for those of you that have seen my SS, it was painted by a Maaco out on Long Island at least 10 years ago and it still looks great. Sure, there's a few blemishes here and there, but for a car that gets abused on a regular basis, it doesn't need to be flawless.
Sure, you get what you pay for, but if the shop works on cool cars and the guys they employ care about their job, you will get a decent paint job for the $$. It won't be show quality, but good driver quality.

As a lot of people said, do your own prep work and remove as much as you can. Also, inspect different locations as Steve said. Talking to the painter and slipping him some cash helps too. I've never had them do work for me but my dad and one of his close buddy's have when they would flip cars.
