Guys:

A police officer was just killed by somebody being a jackass on the road. Very unfortunate and very tragic. This man had a family who is now without a son/husband/father. He was married with three kids, ages 12, 13 and 16. Please be civil with your discussions.

That is what i hate most about getting pulled over, my stupidity putting an officer at danger by standing in the street. I usually try to pull over into a parking lot or something as far from traffic as possible. My condolences to the family.

this is good. i take it a little further.

1) since i am aware of my surroundings while i am driving and am particularly alert, i notice as soon as a police car joins traffic. especially if it is in the same direction i am traveling.

2) the policeman puts his lights on, signaling me to stop.

3) i look for a side street or a parking lot to pull over into. if i am on the highway i will pull as far over to the right as is possible without putting myself or the officer in danger, stop and kill the ignition.

4) both hands on the steering wheel after opening the window.

5) wait until the officer has approached my vehicle and wait for his instructions. perform as instructed with both hands as visible as possible.

6) be courteous. know the officer has seen hundreds of people in the same situation you now find yourself, and he's heard at least that many excuses. answer any questions immediately, if possible, or tell him why you cannot answer (i forget, or whatever else was the reason). cooperate without incriminating yourself.

7) understand why the officer approaches your car in the way that he does. it's for his protection so that a routine traffic stop does not turn into something far worse and that he can go home to his family once his shift has ended.

see? it's not impossible to get along with police. you just have to know how to handle yourself and have a little bit of understanding. in all actuality, it's not something personal and he's just doing his job. treat him with respect and you'll have gained his.

i hate to hear anyone has lost their life to something as stupid as this.

^I'd like to add, always remove the keys from the ignition. First time I got pulled over, I turned the car off but left the keys in the ignition, and the officer told me never to do that again.
