Although, that would explain why I never hear about MB's with steering issues. Keep the fluid clean and cool

if the oil has to travel into a filter and back into the P/S pump, its gonna get cooled off in that process

Ever seen an air pump filter from a turbo Porsche? It's basically behind the engine underneath the rear seat- and the German boys had enough audacity to put a sticker on it that says "service monthly". Nevermind that you need to disassmble the entire air intake to get to it...

does not surprise me. my buddy has a few VW's with some weird stuff.

Fun Fact: the 83 GTI rabbit pickup truck was designed by GM and built by VW...figure that one out. My friend has one of a handful of the original diesel ones.

Yeah most heavy duty trucks have Power steering fluid filters as well. What surprised me was that almost all of the ones Ive seen use Dexron III trans fluid and not reagular power steering fluid.

Most germans use a mineral oil basead ps fluid.
Everything else is pretty much interchangeable with ATF.

uhmmm I topped off (read: my steering issues were explained by an empty reservoir) with regular prestone PS fluid. Is that bad?

cars typically from 98-present have a lot of steering issues. 163 chassis MLs (early body) even had a recall to replace a hose, and even now the newer ones i believe have a service campaign for replacing the rack. Constantly replacing pumps, reservoir seals, racks, etc. Just a fun fact for you Timmy

Kasey, youre fine. You may want to look into where all the fluid went though...
