custom exhaust

i want to install an exhaust on my 3.4 firebird but i cant really afford one. so i was thinking of making one out of 3'' pipe and just buying the muffler and i was gonna simply not put a cat in. how difficult would this be to do and how much power could i gain from the cat delete?

How would you make the over axle pipe? Tail pipes?

Cat delete = 3 HP. Trouble with inspection = priceless.

Save your $$ and do it right. Or grab one of these used systems that come up for sale every so often.

You might be at 170 hp with exhaust and cat delete. I think everything but magnaflow sounds like crap on a 3.4

I think the setup on FBODS4EVER's 3.4 is custom and it sounds good. Do not waste too much money on a 3.4 looking for performance. I used to have a 95 3.4L and I put an ebay intake on it, which gave the car a throaty sound.

Just keep it running & looking good and leave it alone. Get through school. Working on my car while away at school was a PITA, partly because I didn't have $$ to do it right.

It actually was a cold air intake, so the elbow. I think it was 30 bucks, and made of stainless steel. Get a better cone filter than the one they give you with it.

If you want a 3 inch system, just get a cheap tubing kit from jegs or summit and slap whatever muffler on it

Nobody's going to listen to the smartest advice in this thread so far?
Speaking from experience I agree. It's just not worth it imo for a 3.4 anyhow. If you want the sound, get a cutout welded in.

^^new guy just earned brownie points, lol

I pissed away a lot of extra cash in college on the car and missed out on stuff like quality spring break vacations, etc., that become far more rare as you get a bit older. Cars will still be there.

I pissed away thousands into a rust bucket of an Iroc, only to recently come to my senses to sell it off piece by piece and try to get most of my money back so I could own something with an LS1 that isn't a pile of rust. (ahh to be naive and in highschool again). At that age you think what you have is the greatest thing ever and will dump all sorts of money into making it go VROOM.

ok man, look here, HEY look at me....you paying attention? good. DO NOT PUT A 3in EXHAUST ON YOUR 3.4!!!!!!!!! It will sound like a steaming pile of rice. go 2.5in and use a flowmaster 80 series. A few members heard my 3.4 and it sounded pretty decent with that exact set up. did a monster burnout too HAHA

Bonzo makes a good point that the car will always be there.

After college you'll have a house, family, etc.. I had to wait until I was 36 before I knew I'd be able to afford the car I wanted, but it still needs work. Don't they all?

I am in the same boat thunder, I am in college, and want to do so much to my car, but the funds aren't there, so I am just keeping it running and looking nice, doing whatever small things (mostly restoring it aesthetically) I can until I graduate to fix it up and drop an ls1 in.
