I don't think its such a terrible idea at all. It's not to take our classics off the road, its meant to take the hoopies thats on its last limb that doesnt have a chance to pass emissions or any part of an inspection off the road. Unfortunately, there's people who think either a) it's another plan to take our sweet ass classics off the road, b) there's people that KNOW it's not meant to take the classics off the road, but they see it as another chance for their own selfish agenda but again its not meant to take the classic cars off the road. it's meant to take the POS's off the road which there are plenty of...

yea but if you had a beater and traded it in, you could get 4,500 dollars for it when if you sold it by yourself it would never happen.

The only problem I'm seeing is with the 18mpg fuel limit. My buddy has a POS 1997 Sebring that is constantly breaking down and falling apart on him. This deal would be awesome for him to get a good reliable car, but his car is rated at 20mpg average so he can't get rid of it. I also highly doubt, in the cars current condition, it is getting 20mpg.

yeah, the government mpg rating is not very accurate to people who have mechanical issues with their cars and don't achieve that rating even if they drive it like a grandma... hell my 3.4 was getting like 10-15mpg when i had a bad EGR... if it is meant to get clunkers off the road, i think they should raise that number a little bit... it really doesn't look like its costing them all that much too support this... i read 4-5 billion... which is nothign compared to all the other money they have been throwing out... and considering it shoudl help boost car sales significantly

I have been against this since the beginning for a few reasons. The first is, when you sell your car to the government for the $4500, you have to buy a new car. People who may be driving these cheap cars probably can't afford a new car payment at that point in their life.

Next, the bill doesn't have specifics for which cars must be bought, other than fuel efficiency. The buyer can take the taxpayers money and buy a honda, and that money then goes to japan, besides the salesman and dealership.

The 4-5 billion may not seem like a lot compared to the other bills that have passed, but it is hard earned tax payer money that shouldn't be spent. Why can't we just save the cash? A cash stimulus would be more effective than the cash for clunkers bill...even though they aren't that effective.

Apparently on my 87 im getting...
MPG: 15 cty-23 hwy...yea, when it came off the lot
25 Miles: cost-$3.39/gallons-1.39...,maybe a lil more now
Annual Fuel Cost: $2035...deff. spending more than that
Consumption per yr.: 19 barrels/798 gallons per yr.
Annual CO2: 10.2 tons per yr.

I really dont care, even with this info...still dont. I would never trade that baby in for $3500-$4500. I think that as long as there are enthusiasts, poor people with cars, and people who straight up just dont give a ****, this bill wouldnt be accomplishing anything, or atleast make a dent.

like mentioned before though... it is not meant to take classics and cars like ours off the road, it is meant to help people who would be able to afford a new car that gets better gas mileage who would otherwise wouldnt be able to afford it... and also provide a boost to car sales

Without knowing more about the plan and where the money is actually coming from, I look back to the real estate market with the balloon loans and sub prime mortgage market for lessons learned - if you give money to someone who can't afford to buy something, and they enter into a payment program they cannot afford to sustain, then we will all be in worse shape than we are now.

The inability to afford a down payment is what is keeping deadbeat payers away from car loans. Give them $4500 and we'll be in even worse shape than we are now.

Obviously if you cant afford the car, its null and void, so that argument is usesless. The dealer isnt just automaticly going to give you a new car because you have an old one. Goverment or no goverment rebate.

#2, its optional and only for a year. You dont HAVE to, and the goverment isnt forcing you to replace your crappy car.

All it is ment to do is give an incentive for people to buy better and more fuel efficent modern cars. Its ment to get people that are on the fence with thier 10 year old car, who have the money but are not sure they should, added incentive to buy a new car.
This isnt for just anyone with a hunk of **** to pick up a brand new Benz.

im just saying i doubt its going to make that much of a difference for a bill thats only going to be in affect for one year, its almost pointless, maybe if they bumped up the numbers in that year, yea, it would probably happen a lil more, i mean there are ppl that are content with wat they have, they are obviously going to want a lil bit more incentive than just $4,500 if they are actually looking

Its designed to spur teh 2nd biggest investment people will make in thier lives. Same idea goes along with what will a 400 dollar stimulus check do outside of give a quick surge of sales? Most people saved it, this would be actually used to spur sales.

Through my Accountants World daily e-mails there is an article linked from Business Week this morning that says it was passed and just waiting on a signature from the president. Personally I think it is a good idea, I wish I could get a modern car that gets better MPG lol. Anyone who is an enthusiast isn't going to willingly give their car (that they think is worth something) to the government for $3500-$4500 knowing it is going to get crushed.
