MODERN PONY SUPERCARS 1/4 MILE TIMES
I just wanted to place in perspective the times that these cars are running compared with one of Pontiac's fastest F-Body, the 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am. Most of these modern muscle cars i.e., the SS Camaro, the SRT8 Challenger and the Mustang GT 500. were recently tested in several magazines. These cars have between 425 to 545 H.P. and run the 1/4 mile @ around very low 13's to mid 12's. Everybody now looks at these times and goes WOW. Let's go WAY back in time and look at the STOCK Trans Am Turbo with an UNDERATED 250 H.P. and see that it was running around 13.5 @ 103 mph. Not too back for a 231 cu.in.V/6! Now without touching the computer and working with boost pressure, fuel injectors, K & N filter, a Flowmaster muffler, gutted cat and a set a sticky Gatorback "S" compound shaved street tires, I got down to a best of 12.18 @ 115 mph with 12.5 being an average after the motor heated up somewhat. If you calculate the weight of the car and that time, it took around 450 H.P., and it still idled like a stock V/6! There were Turbo Trans Am's that where running full slicks and a downpipe that were running 11.80 @ 117 mph. Now I'am not blowing my horn, but I can't imagine what this motor would be like today 20 years later if it was still in production and improvements. This car could still get 27 mpg on the highway. All of this was also done WITHOUT traction control and solid rear axle, plus a weak 200R4 transmission with 3:23 gears. At the time it was the 2nd fastest street car in this country, with a top speed recorded (by Motor Trend magazine) of 178 mph. The only car that was faster was the ZR-1 Corvette with the Mercury Marine V/8, and it's top speed was 182 mph. Several top Grand National racers at that time, including Jimmy Del'Assandro, said it was possible to hit 200 mph with the proper BOLT-ON mods. Wish I had keep this baby!

Principal: Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Thanks for the information. It was just an observation and not to take anything away from today's cars. Sorry if it offended you, but us old bastards were kicking as at a time when most of the so called pony cars could not get out of their own way.

its just no secret that older cars own. no need to rub our nose in the carpets i love the old formula of spend the money where it counts. hell i consider the interior on my 4th gen downright luxurious and people say theyre cheap too.
the govt doesnt want cars to get faster and faster. they seen to have hit a wall at the 12 second 1/4 miles
