It keep anyone else in the division from getting him. That by itself is a win. IMO it's a push as far as making the team better. +/- 3 games, tops.
And Bill, he's not on the Red Sox either.
The fact that RH is 2 years older than Lee might bother me if I were a Phils fan. I assume the Phils think they have a better chance of signing RH to a long term deal than CL.
CL is a free agent next year. He can take Pettitte's place in the rotation.

having 2 mvp lefties would be great, but not sure if he is worth 20 mil/year... but he's gonna get it so more power to him, no one plays baseball to play ball anymore

I was watching Daily News Live and they speculated something along these lines. Howard, Utley, Werth, Ibanez, Rollins have a window of about the next 3 years together. The thinking was that Lee was simply going to be too expensive past this year and the Phils wouldn't be able to 6-8 years at 20+ million a year. So they ship him off, lock up Roy Halladay for the next 3 years which fits nicely with the rest of their current contracts and hope for a nice run in the couple years. Sounds reasonable, but the games are played on the field not on paper.
At least they are not sitting idle. They are trying to stay atop and get back there again next year. That's all you can ask for.
Chris

Lee already said he's going to be a free agent no matter what. He's going to command Sabathia money(thank you Yankees for once again ****ing up the market).
The deal for RH will contingent on him signing an extension as he's a free agent after this season. It makes sense for them to deal Lee if they can as they'll probably lose him. I just wish they just traded for RH last year.
Absolutely Chris, good point. They see where they need to improve, they're not saying "well we had a good run for 2yrs". They're making themselves better so they can be right back in the World Series again.

That is kind of a bs throwaway statement. Does that go for hockey, football and pro golfers too? How about Tony Hawk? Does he not skate just to skate anymore, since he makes big $$? And Shaun White? Does he still snowboard just for the money? He's racking in the $$ now. Does Paul McCartney not enjoy making music anymore, but he still does it for the $$? Hell, what about Bob Lutz working for GM at age 77. I think the challenge drives him far more than the money. No?
Getting paid and loving what you do are not mutually exclusive. I bet pro athletes love their jobs far more than the rest of the world.

thats where the 'more power to him' part comes from ... but i must ask, how many guys do you think from the all-star roster this year would still beat the hell out of themselves 7 days a week 9 months out of the year for thousand dollar paychecks?

Same could be said for any profession. And $1000 a week is still good $$ for a lot of the Latin American guys. And the players before the $$ era did it.

I was hoping they'd pick things up after this horrible year, but the Phils will have a pretty good team again next year it looks like.

The Mets were really hurt by injuries last year...they should have had a better record(even though they're an average team at best)

I'm just surprised at how bad Beltran has been since coming to NY. He was amazing in KC and Houston.

Nah, he has been right around his baseball card. 280/30/100. Hell, 2006 was his best year and he was a Met. Beltran is not the Mets' problem

If they really refused to give up Reyes for RH they failed. Mets' owners are terrible at what they do.
Mets suck, ha ha.

He gimped a lot of that 1st year, refusing to sit because of his contract, and DL'd 1/2 of last year. Those other years are right on mark.

phils will 4-peat as division champs no doubt, marlins and braves may have a chance at wildcard but most likely no... mets and nationals might as well move to a central stadium and combine rosters

Mets seem to have a bit of a roller coaster team. They'll do good for a few years, then disappear for a few. Good from '98 to '00 (World Series), then suck til '05, NLCS in '06, then implosion in '07/'08.

I'm surprised because Lee was a good fit with the rest of the team. But his attitude towards being a free agent kind of overrides that. To lock in Halladay as a rhp for multiple years to go along with their other lefties makes for a pretty good combination. I was hoping for Lee and Halladay but I knew that was hoping for too much. I just hope Hamels can figure out what he did wrong this year and return to his great pitching next year. And yes, the Yankees will grab Lee when he becomes a free agent.

The wild card is Cole Hamels. Hopefully he can turn it around next season. If he cant then we are in trouble.

Lee didn't have any playoff experience prior to getting him. Why would you keep a player that has said he's going to free agency no matter what? It'd be stupid to keep him.

They're going to lose him after this season, there's no way they're going to pay him the $$$ the market says he should get.
