i have a pocket digital camera, and i love it. i got it for a great price from a member on here. it takes great pictures in a small package, but it does have some down falls. im looking for a camera that is good for the entry level user and doesnt break the bank. i dont need some super camera but i want a good camera that will take good detailed shots and perform well at night and low light situations. so far ive been looking at

fugifilm finepix s1800
nikon coolpix p100

aside from that im not to sure where to look or what to look for. my budget is like 250ish but i can bend that a bit for a great deal or exceptional camera.

Canon's and Nikons are really good, i just googled some Canon ones and they have the powershots and a kit for ~240

that nikon does look nice though

Save money and buy a used dslr with interchangeable lenses. An older Rebel XTI should be pretty affordable by now with a basic canon lens. Then you have plenty of room to grow.

Go try it out in a best buy before you buy it. You really limit yourself if you get a body that has a fixed lens. Canon and Nikon and the big dogs and have the widest range of lenses available. If you are trying to enter into photography, get a decent body and a basic lens. I think you'll be much better off and have tons of room to grow.

If you learn to use the Dslr you'll be happy you bought one... And you can get a used rebel pretty cheap now days ... In retro spect I would have bought a used one case I paid way to much for my canon xsi .. I'd recommend a used xsi or x's for your pricerange ... Since your not like into into photography this will be more than enough... Till you see what kinda night shots you can get with a tripod.. Then it's all over lol

If your looking into Canons I highly recommend this site, http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ they have an excellent used section as well as tips & tricks for all types of budgets. Id skip the point and shoot BS if I were you and just step up to a DSLR, you can always find good deals on new & used.

If you decide to buy new, also read this website.

Just remember its not always the actual camera that makes the photo, its knowledge and lessons learned that really make or break photos.

i know its not all the camera but mostly the user. but even a pro couldnt necessarily do much better with a pocket camera. pocket ones are great for on the go and perform as they should, capturing the image. but to get that extra detail you need more, and thats what im looking for.

ive heard good thinks abt the rebel. the only thing holding me back was the price tag. im going to look on craigslist and ebay. and like you said bmx test it out in bestbuy. i didnt realize the fugi was a fixed lens. i totally see how that would limit expansion.

I've been using a Rebel XT since 2006 when it was brand new. Even though its only a 8 mega pixel it was high tech for its time and its still a reliable DSLR that I carry everywhere. My work camera is a hot to trot Canon 5DMKII though and I have access to a awesome variety of lenses. (Thanks uncle sam!)

I come from a family of photographers, and honestly just saving a tad more and going for a rebel or lower end Nikon DSLR is worth every penny over a point and shoot. even on the better point and shoots the manual settings are extremely limited.

check out B&H's used section, you can probably find a decent nikon or canon dslr in the $3-400 range. I've had my 20D for looong time, and although it's only 8MP I love it.
