You can get a running motor with harness for ~$750-1000....Just an FYI.

look on car-parts and see what junkyards are charging, with high mileage they're down in the few hundred buck range

lol so its worth 200$ that sucks might as well keep it, no way to stroke it and get more CI i heard you can make it 5.7L by overboring it and usings ls1 style pistons but that sounds like alot of cash outlay for little return to me... on my other thread im going to ask is it possible to get 400hp out of the 5.3 economically and will the 5.3 with 400hp be so radical i wouldnt want it as a DD/hauler

Keep it and mod it. As long as it's been taken care of, there's no reason it won't last you.

Startup smoke is usually valve stem seals, and if you're modding it you'll be replacing them and the valve springs anyway. I say keep it, throw in a used LS6 cam and springs, new seats/seals, and off you go.

looks like thatse EXACTLY what im gonna do crain, thanks. i just found an awesome deal... anyone venture a guess as to how much power a ls6 cammed 5.3L makes? it will eventually have milled & ported heads with ls2 valves 10+to 1 compression w/full bolt ons(headers & exhaust, CAI, ud pulley, efans) and a custom tune... also does anyone know the cheapest place to get all the gaskets head bolts and timing set for my head and cam swap?

for $1000 it best be complete, running, and have accessories, a harness, ecm and maybe even the trans.
