Waverunner

I want to get a waverunner this summer but I don't know much about them. Does anyone on here own one or have any advice on what to look for when buying one. A friend of mine has an 03 yamaha 3 seater for sale. I know it's a 2 stroke are there any restrictions on where you can use them?

Mike, I'll give you the short version here and give me a shout if you want to know more.

There are no restrictions on where you can use a 2 stroke - the only restriction is where motors over 10 hp are banned regardless of 2stroke/4stroke nature. (i.e. reservoir).

3 seaters are way more comfortable, easier to ride, and more stable. They also take the waves way better, and they don't take on water like the 2 seaters do. They also can actually fit 2 people comfortably.

2 strokes are fine if you don't mind the slight smell or the sound. I've had zero problems with mine over the past 3 years. Yamaha and Sea Doo are the two main brands.

You can ask Ted how he likes his Yamaha 3 seater too, his is an 04 but it's a 4 stroke - same hull though.

Sea Doo hulls are stronger but unless you really plan on going over big waves its not entirely necessary.

If you've never dealt with boats before, you might want to lean towards a 4 stroke so you don't have to deal with 2 stroke oil and mixing with gas if it's not oil injected. I've had boats for 20+ years and still premix the 2 stroke oil and it doesn't bother me at all. As for the actual hull, it really comes down to your plans on what you want to do and how many people. My 15' boat has a 40 hp outboard which works fine, but none of the newer PWC's have anything close to that low on hp. It seems like they are all 150+ hp. Save for gas money though as jets are very inefficient compared to prop outboards. Ask Nick how much gas he goes through on a weekend, I can make 13 gallons last about 2-3 months with my boat so it's not a good comparison.

I have a 15 gallon tank and went through 14 of those gallons last Sunday at the jet ski meet over the course of just under 3 hours, including about 26 miles of ocean riding

i've had my Yamaha GP800 for a year now and love it. If you're looking at used, I'd say go with a yamaha or Sea-doo. Mine had 100 hrs on it when I bought it and I've put 30 trouble free hours on it in the year I've owned it. IMO, the ski that nick has(Sea-doo GTX) is probably the best ski you could get for your money. They are loaded with options and pretty fast. Four-strokes are nice and if you have the money, then go for one, but the 2 strokes with oil-injection have treated me well.
