Cell Phone time
Alright everyone gather around. It's been 2 years, give or take, and I'm up for a new phone yet again.
The choices are....*drum roll*
1) Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Good Stuff:
Is was the first phone with Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich in its complete and unaltered state. It is a phone designed and built for Google.
It has a massive 4.65 screen with 720p resolution
Removable battery that is 1850mAh
4G LTE
Fast 1.2ghz dual core processor
Bad stuff
It doesn't have Gorilla glass, the whole case is plastic which gives it a rather light and kinda cheapish feel.
there have been reports of people having poor signal quality compared to other phones.
5mp camera is nice but is not as baller as the 8mp.
2) Motorola Droid Razr Maxx
Good Stuff:
3300mAh battery is the biggest baddest battery out there. Motorola said that you could navigate from LA to Vegas and back on a single charge.
4G
Gorilla Glass with aluminum and Kevlar frame.
Screen is a big 4.3
Same exact dual-core processor as Nexus
Despite massive battery, it is the 2nd thinnest phone on the market, thinner than my current Motorola.
Bad stuff:
Screen is not HD.
Battery is sealed and non-removable
Running old Android 2.3
Maxx's non-HD screen isn't that big of a deal, but when you put the two next to each other, the Nexus stands out and is much sharper.
Both feel good in my hands, but the Maxx has a higher quality feel to it with the aluminum frame and rear rubberized Kevlar weave. I also like that Maxx has gorilla glass so it can take the abuse of being dropped a few times.
Motorola does put a rather crappy skin over Android, and combined with the multitude of Verizon preloaded apps that cannot be removed, it looks outdated compared to Nexus.
I always wanted to keep with an American phone company, even if they are both built in China. Maxx will be getting the new 4.0 software, but when is anyone's guess since Verizon likes to hold back as long as they can before releasing it.
Even still, Maxx's screen will always look dull compared to the Nexus, and in the end that's what I will be looking at for the next 2 years. Battery size is also no big deal since there are already larger battery packs for the Nexus that surpass the Maxx's, but do add a little bit more girth to Nexus while Maxx stays thin.
There seems to be trade offs either way.
If Maxx had a higher-res screen, I would get that
If Nexus had a nice form-factor (aka the body) with Gorilla glass, I would get that.
What say you, Boa?

Played with my buddy's GNex. Awesome phone. Pretty big. Battery wasn't too good though. If you don't use your phone too much, I would say deal with it and get the nexus.

I will be using it a lot, especially for auto shows. 3800mAh battery w/NFC is 73 bucks

My X has some scuffs on it, but it was due to a lot of alcohol, live bands, and with lots of people in Chicago. Outside of that, I dropped it a few times.

I would go with the Samsung. Even on location you can probably find time to charge it, or you can buy a second battery to keep charged if it's REALLY bad.
Seems like the Motorola's big points are the tough case and battery.
Android 4.0 vs Android 2.3 is a big deal. Go for the new OS.

You can't get a case with a battery built into it like for the iphones?

I think the problem with that on the Maxx is that the charging ports are on the top, not the bottom. I guess that would make for a funky case, but I'm not worried about it now.
I also picked up a charging dock that comes with a spare battery that can also be charged at the same time.

Well phone signal is pretty key in a phone. They're supposed to call people. Weak data is not as important.

Samsung is horrible with updates but since the phone already has ICS that gets my vote. The phone is just a beast.

No 4G and no screen, so that's out.

I have had a Samsung Epic 4g for a year now. I hate it. Reception is not as good as other phones I've had, I have had to do a factory reset on this one twice (on my 3rd one for unknown hardware issues under warranty). Software updates are horribly late, forget about staying up to date a year from now. I won't buy another Samsung phone.

I won't have to worry about it too much as it is a Nexus phone. I have a direct line to the mothership...
