Technology in our Cars

So this week I am testing a pretty highly optioned 2015 Chrysler 200.

It has Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Detection, Lane Departure detection, front and rear parking sensors, start/stop, and park assist.

Normally it takes a v8 and loud noises for me to like a car, but all of this technology is making me really like the car. The lane departure feature is really cool because it takes control of the steering wheel when it sees you crossing over lanes without a blinker. When you pair that with adaptive cruise control, the car basically drives it self. This car also has a self parking where it can parallel or perpendicular park, all you have to do is shift from drive to reverse.

Has anyone else driven cars with all of these features, what's their opinions? I know most people don't like the idea of self driving cars, but I really wouldn't mind this car as a daily driver.

So what happens when you force the car to lane change without a blinker?

You can over power the steering wheel pretty easily, the lane departure feature is more of a steering wheel feedback. If you don't hold the wheel, the car will basically zig-zag in the lane.

Taking the driving out cars. I really don't care for all this technology 'stuff'. Call me old fashion, but I don't use the Bluetooth in my vehicle, nor the built in garage door opener. My truck also has the backup detection monitor (infrared) and that gets annoying. If I have a trailer hitch in my receiver it disable's it and another dash indictor will let me know this. I do however love the backup camera. All these things 'aid' the driver but people will start thinking its not their responsibility anymore, that the vehicle will compensate for their in-attention or lack there of. Parallel parking will be a lost art in the future, along w/driving a true manual (with a foot-clutch).

...although that's just my opinion.

I agree - although Bluetooth is one excellent thing to have in cars compared to nothing.

Keep in mind that modern cars have miles of wires in them for all these gadgets and options - a lot of things to go wrong and cost you a fortune to fix after the warranty is out. Same goes for all the sensors, most of which if malfunctioning can cause the car to plain quit on you.

I had a Q50 demo that was the top-of-the-line, all the fancy ****.

Steering was magnetic, forward collision warning, lane departure, inteligent cruise control, you name it, it had it.

I did just once sit in the car, no hands, no feet on pedals and the car did steer and stop itself.

Would I buy one myself? no way. garbage and warranty is thru the roof with issues.

It's coming whether you like it or not.

As long as the driver still has some sort of input into the car I'm okay with it. I encourage any of the doubters to go take a test drive in a car with similar technologies just to get an idea of the driving experience with all of these features.

If it were up to me I could go with less technology. Other than the Bluetooth and satellite radio I don't really use any of the other gadgets in the cruze. I know its coming but its getting a little ridiculous.

I see these kinds of technology as further removing driver awareness from the act of driving. I understand that these things are primarily designed to prevent severe accidents, I just fear that too many will come to rely upon them to prevent all accidents.

Personally, I like driving too much to want to deal with a lot of these features. If I find a back road somewhere I don't need the steering wheel shaking in my hand, I just need the tires to grip.

The only technology I want in my car is heat/AC, fuel injection and satellite radio with an ipod hookup.

I'll skip everything else. I never use it and adds unnecessary cost/complexity/maintenance.

Most cars do a pretty good job doing the basic functions of a car.

The add ons are there to convince you to want things you don't need.

GM now equipping cars w/wifi is another problem. For 1, they can monitor your streaming feed to see what you were doing prior to a crash....I doubt mr. insurance will like you catching up on last nights x-factor before hitting that pedestrian if the lane watch didn't kick in.

Pretty soon family vacations will consist of kids skype'ing their parents from the back seat.

Amen. Underrated post.

Edit - I personally don't feel I need the additional safety devices (outside of airbags, traction control, etc). The blind spot monitoring is nice. I can see that being helpful but doesn't mean you shouldn't look before changing lanes.

I very much see the use of back up cameras.

You say that until the ABS kicks in and you don't hit what you would have without it.

My buddy had gotten his wife a qx56 the model year before it had the laser cruise, lane departure, rear end collision avoidance, etc. He traded it in the next model year for one with everything. His wife has had at least 4 rear enders. They have a son and a daughter due in a week. He also owns a body shop AND that's how he met his wife He cares more about his family's safety than anything else.

I love seeing all of the new technology being implemented into cars. I think bird's eye view is the coolest. I'm like most though and don't want anything more than entertainment features. Hell, neither my camaro or jeep have power anything nor abs but I do have a/c in the jeep. I also dread having to repair this ****.

Keep it coming. I love the added technology. I drive for a living and if I could just plug in where I needed to go and hit "go", I'll do it.

Had one of our drivers lose their job, due to a fact that Bentley he was delivering, had installed a BLACK BOX in a GTR. It seems they were able to track the car and find out he was doing 130 mph on a stretch of highway. The more crap they can install into these new cars, the less we can depend on our own senses to be FULLY aware of our surroundings.

^ I probably wouldn't hit 130 but I would've definitely stretched the legs on a gt-r given the chance. That's def going to be the next car.

...even though its one of the most technically advanced cars on the planet....lol.
