Is it wrong to...

want a vette? For the past few weeks I've really be overcome with this urge to buy a new car whether now or in another year and change once i pay off the gtp...ive got the truck to work on, I've got the gtp to play with now but i think it would be fun as well to have a vette just to kinda have one...i could tune it and i have the know how for installing stuff on it, dunno im just confused at this point...i mean i could get an ls1 4th gen for 1/2 the price of the same year vette and they would be almost as quick but well **** it would be a vette hehe I would already have my midlife crisis car so I wouldnt need to buy one 10 years from now when im actually going through it and did i mention its a vette? Yes im bored and this board is slow so im posting my thoughts and what ive been telling everyone that ive been talking to lately.

I like early C5's probably circa 98 with the full hatchback. In a nice blue color

I dunno Bill, Vettes are nice and all, but you'll be straying away from the pack. And your not that old, that you have to have one. I say you buy another Camaro, and come back to your roots. Not this silly pokemon rear-end stuff.

I can see it, I loved my yellow LT1 C4, I had that in the garage and my Z28 (which was/is quicker (much quicker now)) was the daily driver, now it sits in the garage LOL.
I'm loving the crazy cheap prices on the '04 GTOs right now but I think I still want a used C5 for my next car purchase as originally planned, awesome cars. 8)

I agree, that's why I would be keeping the Z28 if I got one, best of all worlds.

Find me a 97 TransAm WS6 6-speed, With under 90k Miles, in mint condition, full black leather interior, and that metalic pearl color like FastBirds. All under $9,000. THEN I will go back to my roots.

Heh....yea, so true.

Well, we are in the process of converting one vette guy to F-body (crazy77c3 is test driving a '93 TA as I type this), and now we have an F-body guy wanting to go vette. What is this world coming too?

& 04 gto's=slow...they are mid 13 second@103-104 second cars...besides im not thrilled about the styling otherwise id consider one...but the prices are still too high for what they are...if the 05's sell well and used come down in price i might consider them but otherwise im still liking an early c5.

I have seen GTO's run the same times as LS1 fbodies stock vs stock.
GTO's interior is also worlds better then the C5, from the seats to the controls, to the materials.
And there is room for a child seat and you can fit your wife.
You can get a 04 GTO for mid 20's.

each to their own. it's your money. not at all that i don't like the C5 vettes, i really do, but you're going to be paying probably close to 20 grand, if not more for a clean early C5 , and like Al said, a NEW 04 gto can be had for mid 20's right now. Not to mention, if the 05's do sell well, don't expect to see the prices drop anywhere near the 04's. The reason the 04's are so dirt cheap right now is because dealers are having trouble getting rid of them, and they're loading them with rebates and incentives.

As for performance, stock vs stock, you're only talking a few tenths faster tops for an early 6 speed C5 vs. an 04 6 speed gto. In a lot of cases, you won't see any performance advantage. there have been people who got high 12's out of a bone stock early C5, but there have also been people getting high 12's out of bone stock 04 gto's. The gto might have a 500 lb weight disadvantage, but it also has 5 more hp, 15 more ft/lbs, a slightly better rear gear ratio, and more aggressive gearing on it's 6 speed.
