Late Christmas present to myself

finally broke down and bought my router tonight...so im posting from my laptop as we speak...easier setup then i thought it would be and not bad in price...thankfully i got the g model cuz i cant imagine the speed of the B but even this is slow loading stuff from my home computer...but it should make life easier in transferring files as well as having another computer thats able to use the internet cool stuff

i wish i had the $ to buy that as a christmas present to myself i did pay off a grand on the gtp if that means anything im really hoping to have it paid off by the middle of the year if i continue at the pace im going.

The G is definatly better than B when transfering or streaming data from a local networked computer. They're both pathetically slow compared to a 100tx full dpx hardline.
To setup the security go into the router settings and enable WEP. The way you get into most routers is through a web browser. Usually something like http://192.168.0.1 then log-in default as admin password admin. Don't worry about the admin password, just make certain the remote admin is disabled (it is by default). Go to where you can enable WEP and give it a 5 character "key". Once that's done you'll be asked by windows to enter the "key" and now it's secure.

I loved when I would babysit and had homework to do, I'd bring my laptop with wireless card and see if anyone had an unsecure connections. Viola! It was weak, but it did what I needed getting paid $15 an hour to be on the internet and do homework!

Don't bother with a 5 character WEP...if someone is smart enough to go looking for open wireless network, chances are they have access to some simple hack tools. Go for the 128 bit encryption (26 hex characters), and make it random.

Bill, If you have the option to use anything other then wep than go that route. Wep was suppose to be secure and be hard to hack into the wireless network when it is activated. But us geeks have easy access to tools that can translate the encrypted packets over the air and then desiffer them into the key that will give us access into your network. But than again you should have no worries of anyone wanting to hack intoy our wirelss network as its no government facility. unless someone wants access to your HUGE porn collection you got going. But to set up wep is easy and set up 128bit encryption. Also disable broadcasting of ssid. And if you really want to get technical you can also set up mac filtering which only allows the network cards with there mac address to access your network.

I could go even further than that to "protect" his wireless network but what's the point? 13 characters is just too much computing effort .Anything more is just added steps of confusion. Here's some of the things I've done to secure networks and wireless networks. The mac address is a good idea but you can go even further by disabling the routers ping reply, unorthadox ip, limit the number of connections to the max number of computers that you would have on at one time (doesn't work well when using laptops for obvious reasons). You could disable the DHCP all together and manually configure all the computers. Heck, just disable the SSID broadcast all together. Put the broadcast on a channel other than default (6). Oh, almost forgot the obvious, change the admin password.
By the time you do all the above you probably will screw up somewhere leaving you with a wireless router that is SO secure that not even you can get into it :P .
The 12 character WEP for me is just a longer password to remember, lol. And I HATE remembering passwords.

most of that is on cd so your only talkin 10 gig or so taking up my hd i still need to get one of u guru's over here to help me get it setup...the instructions are lacking...i think i got the security right and i can transfer stuff and get internet but id still like to make sure there are no loss ends.

All in general there is always a hole somewhere and nothing is full proof. For me i need to take security seriously as i work for the government and maintain a 100+ million dollar computer. But thats not the case here. For the average user you should be fine with the basic of static ip address, mac filtering, wep for encyrption or the newer standards, no broadcasting of ssid and also ignore ping replies.
