There is a cheap way to hold the valves up but you will need to access the crank bolt to turm the motor both ways. Take the plugs out. rockers off. with the piston down feed rope through the plug hole turn the motor by hand and I stress only by hand until the piston stops, change the springs and valve seals, rotate the engine backwards until the rope can be pulled out and move on to the next cylinder. I was a GM, Ford and Chrysler tech for 25 years, Also an NMRA Hot Street crew Chief, race engine builder since 19. I can answer any othe questions you have.

I realize it was late. Some of us spend more time building than posting. I just wanted to let EVERYONE know there was a trick out there. When I street raced my 66 Chevelle in Central Jersey in the 80s I went through a lot of springs. I could change one in a parking lot this way. Would have sucked to drive back from North Jersey with a broken spring.

The rope trick is certainly a good one and can be the only way to do it if you are in a pinch with no air compressor.

Best, the rope trick works in a pinch, but I'd be really afraid to get one of the rope fibers stuck under a valve or left in there for any reason. Probably wouldn't be too good for the engine when you started 'er up. I think an old spark plug wire would be best since it's coated in soft rubber and there's little chance of anything being left behind in there.

when i did the valve springs in my ls1, i just used a piston stop tool to put each cylinder to TDC, and didnt bother using anything to hold up the valves, they weren't going anywhere, i tried.

i wouldn't do the rope thing, with my luck id somehow forget it or i'd turn the crank and it'd fall all the way in.

and that reminds me, i gotta work on my car...
