Does the cam have a lobe for a mechanical fuel pump? I dunno if TBI cams did or not.

That could be the issue. Should have just put a regulator inline and kept the tank pump.

You still could have kept the in-tank pump and just installed a regulator. And then you wouldn't have had to attack your car with an air chisel.

Then you should just take off the mechanical pump now and install an inline electric pump. If it's a new pump and it isn't working, chances are good that whatever cam is in there has no provisions for a mechanical fuel pump.

The fuel pump pushrod goes in before the cam is installed right? I haven't messed with one for years, but you can't install or remove the rod through the side of the block right?
So the cam had to be pulled to install the mechanical pump. Right?

did you use a bolt in the front of the block to hold the pushrod in place while you installed the pump? did you forget to take the bolt out? The pump wont work with the bolt left in...dont ask how i know this...
ive never seen a SBC cam without a mechanical pump lobe
