they aren't bad. motors can take a beating. trannys kinda suck. great for winter or hauling around or down time. i'd consider that as a straight trade. easy enough to work on.

Find out what engine, transmission, and transfer case it's got.

Overall they are very solid and reliable. I'm on my 2nd one (only 'cause I was a jackass and totaled the first one).

I would say go for it. Great winter DD

I had a 94 cherokee that i bought with 164k and sold it to my cousin only about a month ago with 28x,xxx on it. wonderful DD, engine and trans will last, the jeep will rot around it, so take care of that and it will live a long beautiful life. the 4wd is awesome too

the best vehicle I've bought so far has been my 96 Cherokee. I have nothing but good things to say about them. The 4.0L motor is a workhorse, 4wd is great in the winter, you can haul plenty of stuff in them, cheap insurance...the list goes on and on.

Looks like the rear springs are sagging some, but that's not uncommon. You can get a longer spring shackle for a cheap fix (under $30).

Looks like a pretty solid XJ overall. Check out www.jeepforum.com, you should be able to find a fender from someone there pretty cheap.

I talked to Justin about that. You must have a factory freak. I have never seen a Cherokee run that fast. I so a bored out 4.0 run a 16.7 Everything else has been 17.0 or slower.

It looks nice, but the key is whether or not it was well maintained. If it was, the 4.0 will last a good long time. The one in my TJ is pushing 145k and runs as strong as the day I bought it.

The transmission should be okay; they got rid of the crappy Peugot tranny in the late 80s AFAIK. If it's in good condition and runs well, I'd pull the trigger.

Mine has an HO badge, as does Eric's. That's why we're faster

Depends on how high you wanna go. You can get a 2.5" budget boost with new shocks for $250-350, and that would allow you to run a 30x9.5x15 and offroad it with no issues.

If you wanna go bigger, it gets more expensive fast.

how hard is the fender smacked? i can work out most sheet metal, restore body lines, remove creases, etc. and i love working on jeeps.

last weekend i straightened the whole side of my sis-in-law's car, filled, sanded, primered and painted it all in the same day. she was surprised, but i told her i only needed the car for a few hours. and i need to keep my hand in it or i will lose the skill...

See the Craigslist link above...it's got one pic of it. By the looks of it, it would be far easier and cheaper to find a local fender the same color and just replace it. Jeep parts are cheap.
