Safety First.
Sad story, totally preventable. **** happens, never go under a car on a jack. Just a reminder. Jack stands are a must, car needs to pass the shake test.

MIDDLETOWN TWP., Pa. — A 27-year-old mechanic and father of three died yesterday when his Jeep Grand Cherokee slid off its jack and crushed his throat.

After having that almost happen to me, I will never go under a car again without stands.
Sad story.

terrible to hear this. I always put something under the car and give it the push test to make sure it doesn't budge. Even after that I periodically do this again to make sure nothing shifted while I was working on the car.

A lot of them... if its something quick, "oh, it won't happen to me" or they don't feel like taking the time to put the stands under.

Yeap...you have done it so many times before, nothing has ever happend, so why now?
I dont even trust my jackstands some times. Not that they have ever failed, but I hate being under a car for any longer then 5-10 mins.
Im glad my father got me that oil syphon kit last year for christmas. Now with the Mailbu, I never have to get under the car to change the oil. w00t w00t Ecotec!

Then buy better jackstands. I have no fear under my car once it is properly supported. I shake the car before I go under just to make sure it is secure.

i saw the article, it said the car fell on his neck? im curious on what happened. The car seems to still have all 4 wheels on it, so did he have his head under the tire or something like that?
its a real tragedy.

So buy jackstands that are rated well above what you plan on supporting... stick some bricks in there too, success.

...I guess its all going over your head
I have 3 sets of 3 ton jack stands. I dont care what they are rated at, there is still that ONE chance that something will happen.
that bothers me.

“His driveway has somewhat of an incline to it; I think he used the incline of his driveway to get underneath his vehicle,” Cleary said.
“He had a jack, and he took the tire off but didn’t put any blocks or any kind of wedges behind the tires or anything, and the thing fell off the jack.”
Cleary was incredulous.
“He was a mechanic — that’s what I don’t understand. You’d think he would have been a little safer or would have had a place to take it (for proper repairs). It’s a shame, because I’ve been told he’s a stepfather to some of these kids that live over there. And now? Nothing.”

damn, that's a tragedy. accidents happen more often when we take "short cuts" and don't do things safely. i'm willing to bet he had jackstands somewhere in the boxes - it says they were just moving in.

You scared by lightening too? How about falling space debris?
I've seen lifts drop, there is risk everywhere. It's a matter of risk mitigation. Going under a car supported by a jack is high risk, going under one well supported by quality jack stands and has passed a serious shake test is much lower risk. I feel safer under my car when it is properly supported than I do driving on some roads.
