Woot!

Added more reps to every exercise and bumped my bench weight to 220. Slowly working back up to 280.

Very good day for me to say the least.

And can anyone recommend a good set of gloves to wear so my hands don't get all calloused? I guess also for grip, the bar gets slippery.

Yeah. Valeo competition gloves with no padding. I go through a set every 6 months but they are like a second skin- no extra padding to F with your grip.

why oh why don't people work out the legs? its simple and your quads are the strongest muscle group. not that being bulky-big helps you run.

Building up your legs requires a lot more work then upper body.

what kind of equipment do you need? i know a few good excersizes that could work your legs with dumbells, but they would have to be heavy lol.

congrats on your personal record, always good to see people getting in shape..your well being is priceless

oh and as for gloves...i just go into sports authority / ebay and buy a pair of harbinger gloves, they are cheap and havent been giving me problems...

but i may test out the ones bill was talking about earlier, i started deadlifting more and my grip gets weird with heavy weight

I don't recommend gloves just for the fact that they weaken your grip. When wearing them you'll have more but when your not wearing them you'll see that you have less. I suggest just go with out them and just build it up.... my 2 cents

Man I havent benched heavy in years...most I ever did was 315 for 1 rep @ 165 pd. body weight. The good ol days:|

LTb1ow
02-17-2009, 08:35 AM
My weight is around 195, I drink a tad to much water to it fluctuates. But as for deadlifting or sqautting, I lift in my room, second story. I already probably have way to much weight to have safely in one room, and couple that with a potential of dropping weight would be bad news. How much do one of those "cages" for squatting go for?

I've had the exact opposite experience. When I wear gloves my grip suffers. When I lift with my bare hands my grip is much better. That's why I use those Valeo gloves that are pretty thin. If I use a glove with a lot of padding I can't hold the bar towards the end of my deadlift sets.

Building up your legs requires a lot more work then upper body.

But it requires much less effort. Just go to the store and get a set of 5lbs ankle weights to wear around the house.

Building big power would require special equipment, but most of what you need to do to have strong, defined legs can be done with simple ankle weights.

a power rack you mean? not too expensive...it's the bar and plates that get pricey. I found a good deal at the sports authority but it's made in china and feels really cheap. but it gets the job done well. if u get one of those u can get a bench that inclines/declines and use the power rack as a benchpress also.

madness410
02-17-2009, 12:07 PM
oh another thing...if you want strength go for lower reps with more weight. muscles grow better when they are challeneged constantly. I started doing that deadlifting and the past month I noticed drastic improvements.

Slowly working back up to 280.

And can anyone recommend a good set of gloves

muscle has a memory. you'll get there a lot quicker than it took you the first time.

i use weider padded. they are only slightly padded, and only where the callous grows. get gloves that fit, too, so you aren't cutting off the circulation to your fingers and not so loose that they wiggle around on your hand.

Could be- but I wanted to give my joints a long time to heal. If you do a PL routine it can damage your body permanently if you aren't careful. Plus I have to go for a physical next week and I want to get all the supps out before the blood test.

I assume you lift alone? so no spotter? If that is the case it will take a lot longer to get where you want to go, because you wont be able to safely push yourself past your comfort zone.

when i was lifting alone, i rigged up a couple of cables to hold the bar 1/2" below where it hit me in the chest. then in an emergency i could just drop the weight on my chest and wiggle out from underneath it. it happened more than once. then i joined a gym and realized that working out didn't have to be so dangerous...

whenever coming back to the gym after a layoff, it's important to retrain the muscles proper form again. and you can't expect to work out with the same weight after 2 years off, but two weeks off it might be possible.

also, remember that the muscle grows when it's resting, not when it's being exerted. so decent rest every night is as important as proper form. and listening to your body will help you avoid over-training. usually one to three weeks off per year are enough to heal the muscles properly and give yourself a chance to grow a little bit, too.

Yeah, I was pretty into lifting and also took the Personal Trainer course, so I know a lot about it. I just didn't have time, or motivation to make time after I got out of the Army a while back. But now I have a "project" (my wife's cousin) so I am going to the gym with him and trying to make him HUGE.. lol

Try to avoid taking painkillers. Not only do they mask important pain, they can limit muscle growth throught their method of action.

No pills, no caffiene when you are on the C.

Yes. But the pyramid should be going down. When I was lifting for size/weight, I would do 4-6 reps. But starting with a warm up weight, then going to the heaviest weight you could lift for 4-6. Then when you can't do 4, drop 5lbs and do it again. The problem is that this type of workout should be done with a spotter..

If you are comfortable, do it now, and increase by 2.5% if you are under 250lbs.

just benched for the first time in.....4 years. haha, i put up 140 lbs 10 times for 3 sets. i know it sucks but i want to get back up there. i was benching a little over 180 in highschool, but then i stopped lifting weights and do a lot more cardio now. i was also 140 lbs in highschool, now im 170, haha.

what are some good foods with high calories that i can eat everyday? the diet is the hardest part for me, because i eat anything and everything.

yeah dieting is very important..i would say it makes up for 60% of results. my personal trainer friend was on a bulking diet a few weeks ago, he had 80 carbs a meal, 5 meals a day, 3 hours apart. as long as they arent carbs from sugar i think you should be good.

thats pretty good for your weight man. whats your routine for chest?..if u dont mind me asking. and are you taking any supplements?

Ahh the question I never have a good answer for  My "routine" blows donkey dick! I'm a firm believer that most of my gains come from my stellar diet. for the most part I never cared what food tasted like, unless I'm eating out. So I can eat plain boring chicken breast for god knows how long. But diet is not what you asked me about

On to the ****** routine...
My chest routine consists of:

4 sets of bench, 3rd being the hardest, and 4th being 135 pounds go until I cant lift it with a perfect form anymore.
Incline DB press.
Chest press machine thingy.
Followed tri exercises.

Told you it was ******. I have a friend who majors in Exercise science and he was supposed to make me a "great" routine but he is still working on it. I do not have enough imagination to make one myself. Plus Chest/tri is my least favorite day so I ever really cared for it.

As far as supplements: Right now I only take ON Whey + Vitamins, that's all. I really try to take most of the stuff that my body needs through my normal food intake. Chicken, Fish, and Steak are my friends

Ok if anyone wants to make me a good routine, I'll give it a shot

have you ever thought about lifting chest with bi, and back with triceps? i tried doing it and i got better tri / bi workouts, reason why is when you work your chest you also work your tri so when you get to your tri excersizes after working chest, they are already pre-fatigued, while your biceps are fresh. and vice versa. you work out other muscle groups the rest of the week right?

Well I think an "ehh" routine. Also I do not lift to failure, I just lift until my form starts to suffer on the bench. Wouldn't want to get crushed by those 135 pounds  ( I have dropped it on my chest accidentally, it was not pleasant.)

Yea the rest of the week I do, legs, back/bi, and usually I have my triathlon day someplace there. Although I try to go for a run or bike after each workout, time permissible. Triathlon day consists of running (10min), biking (20ish) and rowing (til I wanna puke )

Edit* If i know I wont get to the gym for at least two days then I do full body work outs before i leave, which are actually out of the "New High Intensity Training" book. I love their routines. So sometimes there is structure in my workouts.

im 205 i can do probably 2.5 really clean sets of 245. people say carbs are bad but those are carbs from sugar and bad stuff. good carbs get stored as energy your body uses when you lift. they are also good post workout.

wait tsar u used to be 220 pounds?...howd u lose it all?

First I must say that I lose and gain weight super quick, almost effortlessly at time. Its a blessing and a curse.

The way I got down to 185 was simply by changing what I ate on daily basis and sticking to it. I used to go to the gym the same amount that I do now, but I did not watch what I would eat at all. I could eat few slices of pizza for breakfast, some pasta for lunch and go out for steak later on. This of course be combine with my normal workout ingestion of whey, or back then weight gainer.. I had abundance of calories going on.

One day I just didn't want to look like I did anymore. I didn't have a gut hanging over my belt but I new I had some extra weight on. So I decided to lose it.

Took me about a semester of eating clean, and lifting just as much as I was before, plus incorporating the "holy **** cardio day" that I talked about earlier. I got down to 190 by December, and later on to 180.

I hated being 180 pounds, didn't seem like a good number. Plus I was a lot weaker than I was at 220. So this semester I'm slowly gaining weight, but in good clean fashion. I got myself to be almost as strong as I was before, with the exception of leg strength. I miss that the most. Squats used to be my favorite exercise because I could put up 405 pounds on the bar and go to town with it. Now I struggle when I approach 300, its mentally disturbing... But I'll get there.

I did it for cosmetic reasons reason, I didn't like the look of uncut 220 lbs.. 185 is much, much better. My gf agrees

matt i can teach u good leg workouts you can do with dumbells. but this is the reason why i joined a gym, i have a squat rack at home but i need to buy more weight. i squat 345 at the gym and deadlift 35...and those are compound excersizes and are really good...like the benchpress is for chest.

as for looks...i know what u are talking about the guido look. im not a big fan either but if you have size and your body fat is low you are going to look like that...hence body builders lol.

more reps less weight is BS...some say "oh it will help me get toned"..BS. working out muscles is working out muscles. i mean i guess it may help if u go out of breath and get a cardio workout but there are better ways to get cardio

Ok, so I think I am finally going to stop taking superpump, I think I am addicted...

yeah thats the reason why your body builds up a tolerance. if u quit it for like 4 weeks or so and start taking it again its like your body never took it. does that supplement work for u?
