Here’s my most recent findings, upon throwing the pushrods back in to try to start with stock MAF and IAT, i came across what I think may be the cause of my issue.
3/4 of my lifters have a “give” to them. When putting in the pushrod, i can push down on it and it will give a bit, then spring back up. 1/4 of them have 0 give at all. Like they are solid. Motor hasn’t been cranked in over a week, so is it possible there is still oil pressure in them?
I installed the pushrods and tightened down the rocker on one of the effected cylinders and did a leak down test. Air comes out both the intake and exhaust as apposed to coming out f the crank case on the other tested cyl.
When installed all lifters were seated again the cam lobe, oiling hole all facing same way. However after some debate i DID NOT soak them in oil before install. Just some assembly lube on the roller and cup.
Is it possible I’ve wiped out some of my lifters? They aren’t any crazy high dollar unit, just LS7s
The_Bishop
11-19-2017, 01:19 PM
Not likely that you wiped them out. Not sure I get you on the leakdown test, when you did it last did you have the pushrods installed? Is the cam on the base circle?
If the pushrods are slightly too long but the lifters aren't completely filled with oil, the lifter cup will be 'springy' and take up the excess pushrod length. Once the lifters are full of oil, they'll show the effects of the too-long pushrod because the lifter cup is supported by the hydraulic pressure of the oil in the lifter.
If you're saying that you bolted down the rockers on a cylinder, *and* the cam is on the base circle (meaning both valves closed) and the air is blowing out of the intake and exhaust ports, then the pushrods are too long which is keeping the valves open.
If you remove the rockers from that cylinder that is losing air from both the intake and exhaust and it continues to lose air there, then those valves aren't seating. Not sure what cam you're running or what's been done to the heads but maybe not enough piston to valve clearance, leading to bent valves?

I never did a leak down on this particular cyl. I only did the cyl 1 & 2. Got the same results so moved on. Both Cyl 1 & 2 lifters has spring to them. This cyl lifter had no spring to it. So when bolted down there was no “absorbing” the extra length. With the pushrods in and rockers bolted down, the leakdown test had air coming out the intake and exhaust. With the pushrods out, the leak down test passes.

Would have love for this post to be a vid of a nice lopey idle but sadlly, no dice.
Buttoned up the install yesterday to an unsuccessful end. As you guys know the car would fire, and sputter/backfire, but now it wont even get to that point.
The car is back to cranking fine but no signs of life. No backfires, no pops, no nada. It does have fuel pressure, i have not verified spark. But nothing on the spark end is different.
However, i am trying it with a stock style 3 pin MAF and IAT in the lid instead of the 5 pin MAF/IAT set up i had with the 85mm. In addition to that change, ive also swapped the larger injectors back in and took out the stock units i put it since that change didnt work. Have not changed anything in HP tuners yet to accommodate for those changes, wont be able to until the weekend when my friend has some free time.
Needless to say i was a bit discouraged last night, so after it didnt start i just shut down shop for the night and went out. Today after work im going to be back at it, trying to find if i missed anything that could yield the results im getting.
TL;DR-
swapped in 7.300 rods, bigger injectors back in, and 3 pin maf + stock IAT set up to come to a crank no fire.
LS1ow
11-30-2017, 06:36 PM
Went over everything and didn’t notice any issues.
Swapped back to the 85mm MAF and IAT unit and it fired immediately. Soon as i touched the starter switch it was on.
HOWEVER.
Loud pop and it shut down

Soon as my rad gets in, ill toss that in and hopefully same day she moves under her own power for the first time. Exciting stuff.
I spent a little time the last 2 days installing the Ozite carpet. Pretty big pain in the ass. Its easy to stretch and mold with heat, but holes would develop very easy. For the install it will look like 1 piece mostly, but it actually went in in a couple pieces. I tried to go 1 piece, but i just dont have that patience. Its 1 piece from t top well to what used to be rear seat footwell. 1 piece for the tunnel. 1 piece under each seat(between those 2 rails the have the studs for the seats) and 1 piece on both sides from the front seat bolt stud rail to up under the dash.
It doesnt look bad, and you cant tell were its over lapped for the tunnel and what not bc its under the center console.

I actually emailed them.
That looks like a nice piece but may not be for me. I asked if anyone has run with a Chassis Mount tq arm(2 people in tech thread have, but custom built units) and if anyone has with 3 point SFCs. No one in thread said so. Could be in there, i really only skimmed for pics. Not willing to have to switch my SFCs and have a custom tq arm X member made just to run a certain exhaust.
Seems like the main issue with that kid is clearance, which is going to be a issue for me Bc of Dem Coilover Dat Stance.

Small update interior wise. Threw the whole thing back together last week and decided i couldnt deal with the sea of tan. Pulled it all apart and Order myself some VHT Spray Dye and had some arts & crafts at work on saturday.
Came out pretty good. Not as good looking as OEM black trims, but $12 VS $100 or whatever. Its not a show car so eh whatever. Just cleaned em up with some plastic cleaner, then went at it. I went wheelin with them in the back of my truck so they got tossed around, no scuffs or anything. So im gunna guess its gunna hold up pretty good.

Threw them in along with the harness bar, doesnt look to bad.
Still waiting on new coat hangers since thats what is used to hold in the larger pieces in the 1/4. I must have tossed them by accident. Also those 1/2 turn fasterners for the rear passenger side are super sloppy, prob will end up either sourcing newones, or maybe eliminate them and run a push pin like the driver side.

You ordered coat hanger shens? If not, I have a spare set left over from the V6 car you're welcome to.
Also, I don't think any of the cargo area fasteners are the push-pin style...
I believe they're all the same jankety T-shaped lock/unclock nonsense.

trims on the hatch itself will prob meet their demise since ill be going pin on hatch shortly. And yes, the shade is a dark grey from one of my previous cars, only thing i had lying around. If i spot a black one for cheap, ill grab it. But till then, yolo.

Yeah i grabbed em on ebay for $7 shipped so i cant complain really. Id pay the $7 just to not have you peer pressure me into buying a amazon alexa again.
Driver side panel is pushpin since it doesnt have to be removed "ever" unlike the passenger side which houses the spare.

As for the shifter issue, i stuffed myself under the car again to find the shift linkage popped out of the bracket that bolts to the trans pan. Popped it back in and ran threw the gears 1 time perfect, tried to do it again to no success. Crawled under again and it’s popped out again. Is there’s supposed to be something to hold it in? Right now it just slides in and pops out with little force.

Update on shifter issue, pretty sure my shift cable is just negged. Upon looking at some pics, it looks like there should be some form of "collar" that expands and locks the cable into the bracket. Mine is MIA. I doubt that piece is available separate, so looks like im on the hunt for a shift cable.

havent updated this in what seems like ages. Havent really done much till yesterday with all the stuff going on around the holidays.
-Installed the new shifter cable and solved that problem, in theory, car should be ready to move on its own after the snow melts.
-I am a bit worried my ORY may hit my tq arm mount but only 1 way to find out. Worst case is i move the car open header. Still need to make my way down to Pal Performance for remaining exhaust components.
-Interior of car is pretty much done with exception of putting the dashpad back in and the center console back in. As you can see in the pics below, i need to figure out something for the door panels. Either get some black ones or grab some sheet metal and put my brake to use and make some aluminum ones.
-Swapped out the aluminum fixed back seat for some more comfy to drive in Cypher racing seats courtesy of Handsome Jake, along with a 6LE harness bar. GF hooked it up with some SFI cert'd JEGS harnesses for christmas, so tossed those in too. The aluminum fixed back seat will be tossed upstairs in the garage for racewars so i can go Demon mode with 1 seat.

Quick short story behind getting the wing. Mike picked it up for me off the car he bought his 6 speed set up from(silverdroptop i think is the guys name) It needed paint BAD. It was a 9 shades of hugger orange. A couple weeks later Mike hits me up and asks if id be willing to give up the spoiler for a silver one. The guy that bought the roller that donated Mikes T56, had a silver one and wanted to get the "Orange" one back to better match the car while it sits in the driveway.
Fast forward a few more days, and the guy that comes to get it is a friend of a friend. Turns it that orange Trans Am i used to have, that i traded to Paul, was actually his before i bought it from my friend. Small world.

I dont think its an assembly error, the passenger side pipe can only go on 1 way(has to turn in, not out obviously) and same with the driver side. Both sides assembled with the O2 bungs facing in. Theres a few threads on tech of people running into fitment issues with the ORY from a bad run. Looks like i got a bad apple.
Looks like i can just section it and add a few inches and itll like up, bends seem to be on point.

Got a little more than half done with the install today. Ran(moved as fast as I can) to the hardware store and replaced the clamp hardware with some grade 8 units. That seems to be what people are doing. The x pipe is 3 separate pipes, and it lined up fairly well. Much better than my Y pipe was lol it took a little muscle to get it lined and slid together. But it should be okay. I tighten all the clamps down with my 3/8th impact, and then pulled them a pit more with a large breaker bar. With a jack under the X of course, trying to keep it as tucked as I can.
Ran into a issue with the mid hanger. The hanger is optional, the first year of TD kits didn’t even come with it, but lowered guys were complaining so they came up with it. My car is going to be pretty low, so I figured I’d use it. HOWEVER, the bracket bolts to the car using a longer bolt that replaces the rear pass seatbelt buckle bolt. So you just pull the rear seat, pull the torx and thread the new longer bolt in. Then hold the hanger to the car using the bolt and a nut. my problem was I deleted the rear seats and belts... AND GLUED MY LIGHT OZITE DOWN AND FILLED THE BOLT HOLE WITH SILICON.
...so after about 40 mins of debate, I drove an ice pick threw the silicon from the bottom so it came through the carpet in the exact spot. Then I slit an X in the carpet and ran a drill bit through it a couple times. Cut a slit in the factory bolt(shout out to Kirk for telling me that trick a while ago) and cleaned the threads. Bracket done.
Over axle pipes are in place, but not tightened down. Will finish those tmmr

Tried to finish up the install last night but ran into some problems. Neither are that bad, and neither are of fault of speed engineering.
The kit comes with 5 hangers total. 1 mid hanger, that was taken care of already. Then 2 hangers that replace the factory hangers out back, and then 2 that bolt to were the rear crash bar bolts to for the tips.
I pulled the bolts for the pass side rear hanger out, and upon installing the supplied hanger, the threads were completely blown out. So there is currently only 1 bolt holding in the pass side exhaust hanger. But i dont think thatll be much of a issue.
Secondly, there is some studs (4 per side) off the rear impact absorber (plastic) that come threw the body with nuts on the inside of the rear cross body panel. The hangers for the tips bolt up to the lower 2 bolts per side. HOWEVER, since the studs are mounted in PLASTIC i ran into a little issue. Snapped the damn plastic. There is about 1" of stud sticking threw the bolt still, so im just gunna try to find some bolts and sandwich the hanger between both nuts. orrrr... pull the bumper and order a tubular unit.
Anyway, pic

Aside from you manhandling the install, that looks damn sexy.

Just a heads up, Speed Engineering already knows this is an issue, those clamps are going to leak like a sieve.
I'd buy bigger clamps or buy V Bands and bring the whole thing to Jackson and I'll weld V bands on

hmmm... i thought i read they swapping the hardware out solves it.
I think im going to end up eliminating some clamps on the system and just welding it. Just from the DS over axle pipe to DS tip there is 3 clamps. Ill prob just keep the clamp at the over axle pipe and have the axle axle to tip 1 unit. Same thing for pass side. Pass side over axle pipe has clamp at that union, 1 clamp to hold muffler on, and 1 clamp to hold tip to muffler.

Its possible I missed an update, I was following them on their truck products and the last I read, their hardware was still an issue.
I think at least eliminating the clamps you plan on eliminating will be a good start.
I can tig it up if there isn't anyone more local to you

Yes. Should clear. Prob won’t. A few people in the tech thread for this set up had no issues, hoping for the same. I also have the 3 point SFCs, and the Tq Arm X member sandwiches them to the body, so it’ll Give me a bit less than 1/4” extra of clearance

Do you have another idea for DS loop? The one that comes on the TA is gonna be a tight fit. You can run without one at track rentals because they don’t do much “teching” but you may have issues on regular race nights. Along with they are good to have especially with a stock DS.
